Save a bundle without compromosing performance with these stellar new bargain boards

In years past, budget chipsets have tended to be associated with OEM systems, of ce machines or generally cheap systems. That’s all been changing in recent years, particularly in the case of AMD with its consumer-friendly, unlocked ecosystem. B450 is now pretty much X470 lite. You can overclock, run your memory at whatever speed the system is capable of, and all you give up is a bit of connectivity, SLI, and a few PCIe lanes. So if you’re running a typical system, with a single GPU, an NVMe SSD and a SATA hard drive or two, there’s really very little between X470 and B450. Except the price!

B450 motherboards support all AM4 Ryzen processors. This includes rst and second generation Ryzen, and Ryzen APUs with Vega graphics. B450 isn’t anything revolutionary, but it does add support for a few key AMD technologies, including the improved XFR and Precision Boost 2 automatic OC functions.

The other interesting tech is StoreMI, which is a way to combine all of your storage into a single virtual volume. The algorithm automatically assigns your frequently used les to the fastest storage available, so if you’re using a hard drive to store games, this is a cool way to dynamically allocate frequently accessed les over to an SSD as opposed to lling up the SSD with mega-sized AAA titles.

We’ve tried to go with budget friendly options where possible, avoiding the highest end models from the respective manufacturers’ B450 ranges. Our featured roundup includes boards from ASRock, Asus, Gigabyte and MSI, and this was an especially dif cult roundup to judge. All the boards tested are quality products, and feel very much re ned over rst-generation Ryzen motherboards.

Read on as we take a look at models that will likely end up being among the highest selling AMD motherboards on the market.

If you’re on a budget and thinking of going Ryzen, these are all boards you will want to consider. With the value on offer, you’ll be able to divert your hard earned dollars to a better CPU or GPU. After all, they are the things that will really make your system
