Jill marks mega milestone
Coles employee celebrates 35 years with supermarket group
JILL McNee has hit a big milestone at Nepean Village Coles.
“I started at Katoomba for two years, then I moved here and I’ve been here for 33 years,’’ she said modestly of her 35-year work anniversary.
Ms McNee moved to the Penrith store as one of its original staff members when it first opened its doors, having to wear a hardhat to enter the store due to construction in the centre.
“When the store first opened, we had 32 checkouts and the store closed by 12pm on Saturdays. The young kids that I used to serve have now become parents and a lot of them know me by name,” Ms McNee said.
When she first started, the store was a Super-K, which was Kmart and Coles linked together as one big megastore.
Ms McNee started at Super-K Katoomba when she was 18 and it has been her only job.
“I have lots of favourite customers. The people keep me coming back every day,” she told The Penrith Press.
Many members of the community know Ms McNee and look out for her in-store.
“I’ve unfortunately seen a lot of customers pass away, and then I’ve watched as their family grows up.”
She dedicates herself to the store for the community around her and the friends she works with.
Luckily for everyone, Ms McNee doesn’t have plans to retire any time soon.
“I just love it overall, the team members and customers. It is just a really good place to work.”
Two of her colleagues are also celebrating important work anniversaries: Margaret Jarvis is celebrating 30 years’ service this year and Anthony Ciosmak has been at the store for 25 years.
Collectively, they tally 90 years at Coles together.
“We are all one big family here,” Ms McNee said.
