As a rule Vaux­hall is a rather con­ser­va­tive brand. VXR mod­els aside, the cars that make up the bulk of their sales are largely mun­dane. Ca­pa­ble, and great cars, but not ex­actly pulse-rac­ing ma­te­rial. But ev­ery now and then they go a lit­tle bit nutty! The Monaro, VXR8 and Maloo are prime ex­am­ples of this – when the Vaux­hall top- brass, pre­sum­ably af­ter a cou­ple of lunchtime shandies, de­cide “ah sod it” and re­lease some­thing with more power than the Mil­len­nium Fal­con, just be­cause they can.

This, new for 2016, Maloo LSA is a per­fect ex­am­ple of this. The out­go­ing Maloo had a non-too shy 426bhp, but the new LSA boasts a knee-trem­bling 529bhp, with a stag­ger­ing 495lb/ft of torque! Th­ese heady fig­ures are enough to rocket the Maloo from 0-60 in 4.6 sec­onds, while also be­ing ca­pa­ble of lug­ging half a tonne in its load area.

The 6.2V8 is based on the Camaro ZL1 en­gine with a few tweaks here and there – and boasts an Ea­ton 4-lobe su­per­charger, charge­cooler and a high-flow ex­haust sys­tem with bi-modal ex­haust func­tion (qui­etish when cruis­ing, and not so qui­etish when you’re ‘in a hurry’). In line with the ex­tra per­for­mance, spring and damper rates have been stiff­ened and new rear sus­pen­sion de­liv­ers im­proved rear stiff­ness and brak­ing ef­fi­ciency. Man­ual mod­els get launch con­trol, and all mod­els get an LSD which will come in handy.
