DAYS OF THUNDER
If you’re thinking about buying a V8powered Vauxhall, then now isn’t a bad time to jump on the bandwagon. At the time of writing, E1 VXR8s can be bought for the same price as a used Insignia VXR. Furthermore, with the last-ever HSVs due to land in the next few months, interest in these gaga Griffins is likely to spike, potentially pushing the price of good used examples skyward as those keen not to miss out on the experience of owning an eightcylinder Vauxhall-badged beast snap up whatever VXR8, Monaro or Maloo they can lay their hands on.
The very latest in V8 Vauxhall joy can be bought in the form of the VXR8 GTS. It’s an absolute weapon, powered by the phenomenal 6.2-litre supercharged small-block LSA engine. We decided to start our new Dream Drives series – where we use various performance Vauxhalls to explore the UK's best driving roads – from behind the wheel of the model’s sibling, the totally hatstand Maloo R8 LSA. With 536bhp and the strips of tarmac around rural North Hertfordshire at our disposal, it’s safe to assume that we had a lot of fun. Check out our adventures on p78.
There’s more Thunder from Down Under to be found elsewhere in the mag thanks to features about Jason Wilson’s 680bhp VXR8, a 700bhp LSA-equipped Monaro VXR and some exciting HSV limited editions. We’ve also reported on an ex Gerry Marshall Thundersaloon Chevette HSR and Ell Howard’s 450bhp Mk4 Astra – a GSi that tried to kill itself before hitting close to 171mph on the runway at Vauxhall’s recent Thunder Road event.
Perhaps even more thunderous is the news that we’re launching an all-new Performance Vauxhall Show. It’ll run in addition to PVS at Santa Pod, but instead of encouraging quarter-mile sprinting, the new event will provide you with the opportunity to test your Vauxhall’s handling abilities on the world-famous, corner-crammed asphalt at Rockingham Speedway (Europe's fastest racing circuit). We’ll be hosting the final round of the UK’s Time Attack Championship at the show, which is scheduled to take place October 15th 2017. It’s gonna be a mega day. Get it in your diary!
