Figure in the fog

Fernando Guerra reveals how he shot one of his most popular images

“This picture was one of the images I shot at Pocinho High Performance Rowing Centre in the Upper Douro Valley of Portugal,” says Fernando. “When I got to the location I couldn’t see the building because there was so much fog. But instead of giving up, I just stayed there and tried to make something special with the fog. The building was completely empty for a long time, then I saw someone walking by and he completed the picture. It was lucky that he appeared, but I had to be there to get the luck. I knew that sometimes cool pictures happen in bad conditions. This image – and others taken at the same time – was published a lot. Younger photographers always expect pictures to arrive without a lot of work, but this is an example of patience paying off.”
