How to use DSLR lenses on an EOS M camera

-

You can’t attach a lens designed for an EOS M mirrorless camera to an EOS digital slr. Not only is the diameter of the lens mount too small, the lens projects a smaller image circle that fits the proportions of an APS-C sensor; so, even if it would fit, it would lead to vignetting on a full-frame sensor. There’s also the question of flange distance; the shorter distance of EOS M cameras means that the image projected by an EF-M lens couldn’t be sharply focused on the sensor of a DSLR.

The reverse is also true: you can’t directly attach a lens designed for a DSLR onto an EOS M camera. That is, unless you use an adapter. Canon’s EF-EOS M Mount Adapter attaches to an EOS M camera and enables you to fit any EF and EF-S lens, including macro and fisheyes, which the EF-M lens range currently lacks.

The adapter increases the flange distance, so EF and EF-S lenses will be positioned at the correct distance from an EOS M camera’s imaging sensor to create sharp images. It also includes a removable tripod mount so you can support heavy lenses directly without placing undue pressure on the camera’s lens mount.

Obviously, the minute you add a whopping great EF lens to an EOS M body you lose the smaller size advantage of the mirrorless camera. You also need to factor in the crop factor of the sensor when choosing appropriate lenses…
