01 Monopod

In order to lower the camera to the ground a lightweight monopod, like the Manfrotto here, is ideal, but if you don’t have a monopod then simply extend one leg of your tripod instead.

02 dslr with wi-fi

A camera with Wi-fi built in, like the 5D Mark IV, is essential. It also offers 30.4Mp and exceptional low-light performance, which is invaluable in the beautiful but dim light of dawn and dusk.

03 phone

You need an Apple or Android phone with the free-to-download Canon Camera Connect app. Besides operating the camera, the app can transfer images and add GPS tags.

04 spare batteries

The Wi-fi function will drain your batteries much quicker than normal camera operation, so bring along spares. Remote shooting also drains your phone battery, so keep a car charger to hand.

05 long lens

You need a telephoto lens to frame distant animals. We used 70-200mm and 100-400mm lenses, plus a 1.4x teleconverter, which gave us a maximum reach of 560mm on the 100-400mm lens.
