The Lost Girl
Chris reveals the story behind his iconic portrait from 20 years ago, the inspiration for his In Search For The Lost Girl, 2018 BBC detective documentary
In Indonesia, back in 1998, “I was filming a wildlife documentary in the Sumatran rainforest, where I had a remarkable encounter with a tribe of huntergatherers. They were called the Orang Rimba and they lived in harmony with their jungle home, and I’ve never forgotten them. I took one photograph that’s become particularly special to me, of a young tribal girl,” says Chris. “She’s become a barometer for me of measuring the condition of our planet.” Chris took this original portrait on a Canon EOS-1 film SLR and Canon L-series telephoto lens. 20 years later, in his incredibly moving documentary, Chris overcomes obstacles and heart-breaking revelations, to search for and find the girl in the picture.
