Here’s how to set up your ex­po­sure to cap­ture the rays while keep­ing ev­ery­thing else dark and moody…

We need to keep ev­ery­thing dark ex­cept the parts lit up by the flash. Set Man­ual mode and try th­ese set­tings – ISO100, shut­ter speed 1/250 sec, aper­ture f/8. This un­der­ex­poses am­bi­ent light­ing, as you can see here where the flash didn’t fire.

With the flash turned on and at full power, the smoke will be lit up from be­hind and the light will catch the edge of the sub­ject, cre­at­ing the at­mo­spheric back­light­ing and dark set­ting that we need for the rays of light to show up clearly and ef­fec­tively.
