Swans glide to win over Kats

Pilbara News - - Sport -

Last year’s North Pilbara Football League premiers the Karratha Kats will watch the finals from the sideline after bowing out in their must-win last game of the regular season against the South Hedland Swans.

A determined Swans side needed a massive points differential to top the Dampier Sharks on the ladder, travelling strongly for the match and winding up the winners 17.15 (117) to 6.4 (40).

Although a big gap, it wasn’t enough to push them in front of the Sharks, who beat the Karratha Falcons.

The Kats were on a five-game slide, but had one last shot for fourth spot on their home ground at Millars Well.

Swans led all the way through the match.

They opened it up in the second period, taking a 9.5 (59) to 4.3 (27) lead going into the second half.

From there the Swans kept Kats’ scoring to a minimum and further opened up their lead.

Jack Coppin kicked three goals for the Swans, while Morris Coppin nabbed two, and Jesse Simpson got three.

Lee Roser had two for the Kats in a disappointing end to their season.

The reserves match was completely different.

Kats took a commanding 10.6 (66) to 5.1 (31) lead at halftime.

The Kats managed to coast the rest of the way through the match, with a slight comeback by Swans in the fourth snuffed out 13.8 (86) to 8.4 (52).

Kats reserves will play the Wickham Wolves in Dampier for the first semifinal.
