Ashburton faces ‘challenges’ balancing needs

The Shire of Ashburton has introduced a rates concession valued at $294,215 in their 201516 budget for residential and community rated properties.

Properties whose valuations have increased from 2014-15 to 2015-16 are eligible.

Shire President Kerry White said the budget proved difficult as the council sought to balance the needs of the community against a downturn in the mining industry and adjustments in property valuations between towns.

“These factors required council to show prudence and discretion in the selection of which of the many funding requests could be accom- modated in the budget,” she said.

“Whilst the future is bright for Ashburton, there are still challenges to be faced and council will work proactively to deal with them in a positive and equitable manner.”
