Announcers named as national finalists
■ Karratha Spirit Radio 1260 announcers Pablo Newton Farley and Angie Ayers have made the short list as finalists for a second consecutive year in the 27th annual Australian Commercial Radio Awards.
Organised by Commercial Radio Australia on behalf of the radio industry, the national awards cover 33 categories which recognise radio’s brightest stars from around the country.
This year, entries were received from 260 metropolitan and regional radio stations.
Ms Ayers said she was ecstatic to be announced as a finalist for the Best Direct Salesperson award.
overwhelmed at the news, and even though this year it’s my name on it, it’s always a reflection on the team you work with,” she said.
“Our station manager Jude has been managing for almost six years now and has been instrumental in shaping our team.
“For me personally, it’s an exciting time as I start developing my on air skills and see where that leads.”
Mr Newton Farley made the short list in the Best Station Produced Comedy Segment for his World Record Wednesday show.
He said it was incredibly humbling to be recognised alongside the likes of commercial radio legends like Fitzy and Wippa and Kyle and Jacquie O.
“It’s always great to display what’s on offer in the North West — and to get Karratha on the map on a national level is a big upside to being a finalist in an award like this,” he said.
“I love regional radio. The fact that I can say something on air and that afternoon down at the shops someone can have a laugh with me about it, is one of the big benefits.
“I guess being the fastest man to bounce a basketball and eat a banana has really paid off.”
The ACRAs follow the National Radio Conference, which will be held at Jupiters on the Gold Coast on October 9.
Winners will be announced at a gala black tie event at Gold Coast Convention and Entertainment Centre on October 10.
