20th Robe River rodeo ropes in a big crowd
There were plenty of thrills and spills last week at the Pannawonica Rodeo Grounds, which sprung to life for the 20th Robe River Rodeo celebrations. More than 2500 spectators flocked to the three-day event, which featured a strong contingent of local jackaroos and plenty of entertainment for local families to enjoy.
More than 2500 competitors, residents and tourists flocked last week to the dusty red Pannawonica rodeo grounds, which sprang to life for the 20th Robe River Rodeo celebrations.
This year’s camp draft and rodeo, which went across three days, featured plenty of spills and a strong contingent of local jackaroos making their mark in the competition.
The saddle bronc went to the 2014 winner from Onslow, Brock Harris, with an outstanding 74point ride.
The station buck jump was won by Yalleen jackaroo Donald Percy, who scored 73 points for his impressive ride.
All-round cowgirl was won for the second consecutive year by Karratha local Sally Latham, who cleaned up more than $1200 in prizes after winning both the ladies and local barrel races.
Laurence Oversby won the allround cowboy title, after an impressive performance across the board in the steer wrestling, team roping and saddle bronc ride.
Young up-and-comer Jeremy Green dominated both the under-18 juvenile and open steer rides.
Junior rider Mickaela Mongoo also had a stand-out performance in the under-18 juvenile barrel race, leading the field on a time of 16.75 seconds.
Outside of the ring, spectators were treated to a good variety of food, merchandise and children’s activities to keep the crowd busy.
