Jackson goes to Rio in miniseries
Former Karratha local, Joel Jackson, starred in the first instalment of Channel 7’s much anticipated two-part miniseries, Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door, on Sunday evening.
Not The Boy Next Door tells the rollercoaster story of Australian entertainer, Peter Allen, who went from being a childhood performer in country NSW to a Grammy and Academy Award-winning songwriter and the toast of Broadway.
Allen was best known for his signature song I Go To Rio, the unofficial Aussie anthem I Still Call Australia Home and Tenterfield Saddler, a moving tribute to his grandfather George Woolnough.
Jackson’s appearance as Peter Allen comes off the back of his success in the Foxtel series Deadline Gallipoli.
He said although Allen’s music was relatively new to him, he found the character a relatable one to play on the small screen.
“I knew about his life and some of his trials and tribulations, but I had never really heard his catalogue of music before,” he said.
“He came from a family in a small town, just like Karratha, where it was a challenge for him to find himself and do the things he wanted to do.
“That was one of the things that made it an easy role to play, understanding what it’s like to have that hunger to get to a point in your career when you can stand back and be proud of how far you’ve come and everything you’ve achieved.”
Jackson said the miniseries provided a new twist on previous stage productions based on Peter Allen’s life, played by Broadway stars like Todd McKenny and Hugh Jackman.
“We have focused on the impact of Peter’s relationship with his father and mother and have highlighted the important women in his life,” he said.
“In comparison to the musical we capture some quiet moments of his life away from the stage and away from the limelight.
“We have captured who he was as a person and as a man.”
Jackson said it was a privilege to star alongside some of Australia’s biggest names in television such as Rebecca Gibney, Sara West, Sigrid Thornton and Nick Farnell
“It was like sharing a sevenweek master class,” he said.
“It was such a blessing to work alongside these big names and watch and learn from them along the way.
“It has been a very humbling experience.”
The second instalment of Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door will premiere on Sunday September 20, at 8.30pm on Seven.
