Family rescued after boat capsized
■ A family of four has been rescued from an island off near Balla Balla after their boat capsized on September 14.
Emergency services launched a search after receiving a distress signal near Balla Balla Creek, about 100km north of Roebourne about 10am.
A local helicopter spotted the family on Sable Island, about 8km from the coast, a few hours after they activated their EPIRB.
Another local fisherman collected the group, believed to be an adult and three children, and brought them back to the mainland by about 1.30pm.
The group told rescuers they were not far from Sable when they were hit by four waves.
They were able to swim to the island and set off their emergency beacon.
Authorities believe the family had been camping on the island for a few nights and had been snorkelling and fishing from their boat.
Roebourne police Sergeant Jerry Samoa said it just went to show how important having an up-to-date EPIRB was.
He said the adult had just bought a second-hand EPIRB which helped authorities to co-ordinate the rescue.
