Community help urged to stop deliberately lit fires
■ More deliberately lit fires were recorded in the build-up and wet season in the Pilbara than anywhere else in regional WA last year.
A total of 191 deliberately lit fires were reported between August 2014 and February 2015, second only to Perth in WA.
Department of Fire and Emergency Services acting superintendent David Diver said deliberately lit fires accounted for the majority of fires reported in total in the Pilbara during the last fire season.
“Volunteer firefighters are ready and able to respond to bushfires, but it’s disappointing when incidents can be prevented,” he said.
“We urge the community to report any suspicious behaviour to Police Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
“Your help in reporting suspicious behaviour may stop the next major bushfire.” Mr Diver said 357 bush or scrub fires had been reported to DFES during that time.
Arson was linked to most of the Pilbara fires last fire season.
