Dampier man rides to raise funds

■ South Africa to Adelaide to Dampier to Fremantle, it’s not the trip of an expat working Down Under but that of a Ford 1972 XYGT.

Dampier man Phillip Gogel won the car — styled and decaled like Allan Moffat’s 1971 Bathurst Winning Car 65E — in a 25 words-orless competition and will now take it on a tour to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.

He will be one of 25 cars participating in the Aussie Muscle Car Run WA, which showcases cars manufactured from 1963-77.

Mr Gogel won the classic car in 2011.

It was found in South Africa, because cars were once exported there given the similar terrain and conditions, and restored to its current condition.

He took part in the 2012 Muscle Car Run in South Australia and was ecstatic he could bring the car over for the seven-day drive through the South West of WA, an area he is unfamiliar with.

“I saw it advertised they were doing the inaugural WA muscle car run,” he said.

“So I thought it was a good chance to combine a love of muscle cars and go see the South West.”

Each entrant needs to raise $4000 to do the run, but the pressure is already off with Handle Property Group donating $5000 straight up to sponsor Mr Gogel and his co-driver Tania Waiomio.

The car will be on display at the Shopping Centre on October 1 and 2, so people can check out the ride and donate to the charity.

Mr Gogel said they would be doing a 100 squares game where you enter for $2 for the chance to win $100 with the other $100 going to the foundation.

Mr Gogel has seen firsthand the difference donations can make.

His mother was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia eight years ago and, despite some side effects, is going strong after being selected to trial a new drug.

“The Leukaemia Foundation’s motto is not only find a cure but to accommodate people … they’re not only doing research, but also caring for those that need to care for leukaemia sufferers,” he said.

The run starts in Fremantle on October 24, with drivers to be waved off by Moffat himself.

There will also be a bidding war for Moffat to drive one of the cars.
