Stage set for bush poetry

Pilbara News - - Lifestyle - Courtney Fowler

■ Performing bush poets around Australia are practising their lines and honing their performance skills in preparation for the annual Golden Damper Awards in Tamworth, NSW.

The event, now in its 30th year, is regarded as one of the most important competitions on the Bush Poetry calendar and forms an integral part of the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

The Australian Bush Poets Association, the national representative body for all bush poets, runs this special awards competition not only to showcase the talents of experienced poets, but to provide a friendly stage for newcomers to “have a go”.

Poetry recited must be “proper” bush poetry, with rhyme and rhythm and have an Australiana theme.

Performing poets are encouraged to apply for the 2016 Golden Damper Awards, held in West League Club in West Tamworth on January 19-23.
