School-based apprenticeship and traineeship program beneficial to all

Local businesses which employ full-time secondary school students can use the school-based apprenticeship and traineeship program to upskill their workforce and access financial assistance.

More than 21,000 students signed up to the program last year and their employers received up to $2000 in Government support.

Putting young part-time employees on school-based apprenticeships and traineeships upskills workers and can attract government incentives.

If you are employing a full-time secondary school student, for a minimum of one day a week, you can offer a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship.

Students also gain a head start with their careers and a recognised qualification while still working towards their senior secondary school certificate.

Apprenticeship Support Australia manager Lena Constantine said the most difficult part of the process was finding the right employee.

“Finding and hiring the perfect candidate often involves the most work — once you have the right employee the process is easy,” she said.

“As the economy transitions and our State enters a new phase, it’s more important than ever for businesses to invest in the training of their younger employees.”

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships work best when the school, employer, student and parent can work out an arrangement that suits all parties.

The study required to gain a nationally recognised qualification is flexible to fit around work and school commitments, and it’s free for the student and the employer while the student is still at school. Apprenticeship Support Australia is an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network provider that can help businesses and employees work together to find the perfect qualification.

It provides mentoring and support to businesses and students throughout their school-based apprenticeship or traineeship.
