Weerianna Street Media’s Welcome to Country application has only been around for a few months but has already notched up its first award.

The app won the award for best innovation in online media at the Remote Indigenous Media Awards.

WSM director Tyson Mowarin said the award was recognition for the popularity of the app. “This gives it a bit more backing to go and potentially secure funding to make an Android version and hopefully encourages other groups to contribute welcomes from their country,” he said.

The free iPhone app uses push notifications to display a welcome to country video, text or image by a traditional owner when crossing available tribal boundaries.
