Former Karratha resident Elise Nazzari has been selected for a second consecutive year to compete in the Miss Galaxy WA finals in January.

Ms Nazzari was the only contestant from the North West to be shortlisted for the WA State finals.

Her success comes on the back of a strong performance at the Miss Galaxy Australia finals and a sixth-place finish at Miss Global Australia earlier this year.

Now living in Perth, the Karratha-born woman has left her career in nursing to study sociology and anthropology at university.

She said social justice, indigenous engagement and healthcare were issues she felt passionate about sharing with a national audience through the beauty contest.

“I work at the equity and social justice department at Curtin University on a Federally funded research project and have just contributed to my first sociology paper,” she said.

“I never believed that going into research was an option for me, but my experience in Miss Galaxy WA gave me the confidence to pursue this career.

“Until then, I wasn’t ready to educate people on issues I felt passionate about — last year’s competition really has been a life changer for me.”

Ms Nazzari said the second time around she was feeling more confident and prepared to take on the challenge ahead.

“The first time I entered it was just to see if I could do it — this time I am feeling more competitive,” she said. “Of course winning isn’t everything, but I feel like I have so much to give.

“I have gained so much from this program, it has benefited me with my confidence and self-esteem and I want to help other young girls with that too.” Ms Nazzari said she planned to return to the Pilbara to mentor young girls regardless of the outcome of the pageant.

“I’d love to work with groups like Pilbara and Kimberley Girl to run personal development workshops for young women,” she said.

If you are interested in working with Ms Nazzari to run personal development workshops in the region, contact her on 0427 244 026 or email elise_nazza@hotmail.com.
