In keeping with the theme of mental health week, Mentally Healthy WA and V Swans Ashburton held a Have A Go Day for Onslow residents to take part in on World Mental Health Day last Saturday.

The official theme for Mental Health Week, Act-Belong-Commit, encourages everyone to take action to protect and strengthen their mental health and wellbeing by keeping active, belonging to the community and making commitments to engage in regular activities.

Act-Belong-Commit Pilbara health promotion co-ordinator Gemma Brooks said it was a good time to raise awareness of mental illness and reduce stigma.

She said it was also important to reflect on what keeps us mentally healthy.

“Most of us think a lot about what we can do to keep physically healthy, but we rarely stop and think about how to look after our mental health” she said.

V Swans Onslow early years liaison officer Amanda Meyers said the event was about raising awareness of what was on offer in the community and encouraging people to get involved.
