MacTiernan champions more autonomy for north
The north needs more autonomy and its own decision-makers based in the region to drive growth, according to Perth MHR Alannah MacTiernan.
Responding to a question asked by City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long about basing an office of northern Australia in Karratha, Ms MacTiernan said the region should be striving for even more.
“Another office which ultimately has to go through the bureaucracy in Canberra is not going to cut the mustard,” she said.
“We need a far more extensive decentralisation at a State level, particularly with health, community services and education … to have decisions made directly from an agency based in the Pilbara and in the Kimberley.
“I challenge the fact that (decentralisation) has to be more expensive when in fact you wouldn’t have the same number of people flying between Canberra and the north.”
Ms MacTiernan said the idea of an office of northern Australia was nothing new.
