DSR calls for comment on FIFO sports attendance

■ “Fit in, or **** off ” is a popular Pilbara slogan found on stubby holders, and the Department of Sports and Recreation has explored the first half by looking into the impact fly-in fly-out workers have on country sports clubs.

The department is hosting a forum on October 27 to share the findings from its Partners and Family Members Survey with the public.

DSR South West regional manager Troy Jones said they were keen to hear personal stories from those who wanted to be involved in community sports but faced time constraints because of work.

“From a club perspective, having a lot of FIFO members means participant and volunteer numbers can fluctuate. Some clubs have reported having as many as 20 members unavailable each week, which can cause a range of difficulties,” he said.

“We hope the people who join us at this forum are willing to share some of the ways they are overcoming these problems so other people can benefit from their experience.”

The FIFO Life forum will be at the Karratha Leisureplex on October 27 from 6.30pm to 9pm.

Attendance is by RSVP only, which can be done by contacting Amanda Hohneck at amanda.hoh neck@dsr.wa.gov.au by October 21.
