Ceremony marks Quarter milestone
A year after earthworks for The Quarter started, Doric has held a traditional topping out ceremony to celebrate finishing the final level.
Completion of roofing on the GP Super Clinic, where construction began in April, was also celebrated last Wednesday.
Doric chief executive Vince Mulholland said about 170,000 man hours had been expended on The Quarter, with a further 11,000 still required.
“We have used 6775cum of concrete, 500 tonnes of reinforcing steel, 559 precast panels, 200 tonnes of structural steelwork and on completion there will be approximately 3680sqm of glazed facade used in The Quarter,” he said.
“These are all significant numbers, but the figure that we are most proud of is that of local content.
“Doric has let 69 per cent of trade packages to local contractors, which amounts to $18.5 million of contract works.
“This translates to employment for 23 Karratha contractors.” The Quarter is on track to be completed in mid-2016.
Mr Mulholland said the GP Super Clinic, while a small project, would have a big impact on Karratha and the broader community.
“This medical facility has been designed with an acknowledgement and respect for Aboriginal culture, with all consultant rooms on the ground floor and containing a window so that our indigenous people might be close to the ground and able to see the sky,” he said.
“Similarly there is a male and female corridor between the consultant rooms enabling males and females from the same family to seek medical treatment without the risk of seeing or discussing these issues with members of their family.”
The Super Clinic will offer doctors educational programs and clinical training facilities.
It is expected to be completed in March.
The practice of topping out a building comes from Scandinavia and involves placing a tree on the roof to appease tree-dwelling spirits displaced by construction.
No trees were placed on The Quarter or GP Super Clinic roofs, with Doric instead opting for drinks and nibbles at Vita Cafe.
