Small businesses have big presence
■ North West small businesses represent more than one-third of this year’s nominees for the 2015 WA Regional Small Business Awards.
Karratha (3), Onslow (3), Port Hedland (4) or Kununurra (2) businesses appear in all seven categories.
The Best Aboriginal Business award will be an all-Pilbara affair between Karratha’s Beautylicious by Chelsea, Port Hedland’s Binbirri Contracting and Brijarcass Security from Onslow.
Onslow Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Geoff Herbert said Chevron’s West Pilbara Business Support Program had been of benefit to Onslow businesses.
“For us this is another recognition of how well things are going in Onslow business-wise,” he said.
“This year was the first time we held awards ourselves, so to get three of our businesses in the State finals is great recognition.
“It would be fantastic to take home at least one of the awards we’re up for.”
Mr Herbert said there would be extra bragging rights on the line for the winner of the all-Pilbara best Aboriginal business award.
Beautylicious by Chelsea owner Chelsea Brown said it was good to see so many North West businesses nominated, given the tough times recently.
“Sometimes when you run a business you can feel like you don’t get recognised,” she said.
“So to be nominated is really exciting and a bit overwhelming, to be honest.
“I’m just happy to be nominated. Winning would be an added bonus.”
Pilbara Site Pics and Yo-Get-It are the two other nominees from Karratha.
BriJarCass Security will be joined on the night by Onslow Beach Resort in the 11-20 employee category and KHB Mobile Mechanical in the five to 10-employee category.
Desert Goddess Beauty Clinic and Full Steam A-Hedland Contracting will represent Port Hedland. Kununurra’s Kimberley Air Tours and Kimberleyland Holiday park round out the 12 North West entrants.
