Top prizes for mackerel day
Anglers will have another chance to test their skill and luck this weekend as lines hit the water for the Nickol Bay Sportfishing Club’s annual Mackerel Family Fishing Day on the waters off Dampier this Saturday.
NBSFC president Ken MacFarlane said the competition was suitable for all ages and skill levels and was open to everyone.
“There are fantastic prizes for all categories, including adults and juniors, such as a $500 cheque and custom Headley Rods/Daiwa reel fishing combo for the overall winner and excellent prizes from Getaway Outdoors and our other sponsors,” he said.
“There is a complimentary barbecue at the end of the competition during the presentation.
“Entries close Thursday (tomorrow), so get in quick.”
Gregg Headley from Headley Rods has been hard at work building the prize for first place.
Headley said the custom 10kg spinner rod came with all the bells and whistles.
“It is a beautiful fishing rod — what I call a pipeline spin, which is named after fishing the pipeline off Karratha,” he said.
“This started as a hobby for me about 25 years ago but really gained momentum when I moved to Karratha two-and-a-half years ago. Each rod is built to individual specifications, so the customer has a lot of input into the actual design.”
Headley said it was a “real buzz” building rods for the community and the game fishing club.
