A close shave for Movember

Pilbara News - - Pilbara News - Alicia Perera

Jos van Helfteren has grown quite attached to his beard after 13 years, and he does not cut it off for any cause.

Mr van Helfteren, a former resident turned fly-in, fly-out worker with Rio Tinto — known as Karratha’s “hairy hippy” — has finally caved in to popular demand to lose the beard for the sake of Movember.

He is running a joint campaign with friends Robert Burns and Glenn Vivian, who are growing facial hair while he is losing it. The trio are aiming to raise $10,000 to $20,000 and are currently at just under $4000.

There will be an auction for who gets to cut Mr van Helfteren’s beard, and if total donations reach $20,000, he will cut his hair as well.

See Mr van Helfteren lose his beard on Tuesday, December 1, from 6pm to 9pm at Searipple Karratha.
