Sneak peek at new hospital

Pilbara News - - Pilbara Opinion - City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long

The first views of the new Karratha Health Campus have been provided to the council.

They show an ultra-modern two-storey building, with a third storey for equipment rooms, spreading over the extensive site.

There are voluminous car parking spaces, some on-site accommodation and a new Population Health area within the hospital building itself.

Areas with protected gardens will be incorporated within the building envelope and extensive landscaping will be done around the hospital.

There will be a pedestrian plaza connection to the city centre. The building is being designed and constructed by Brookfield Multiplex, which recently competed the $2 billion Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth.

It is being funded almost entirely by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions Program ($207 million), with a small contribution from the Pilbara Health Initiative.

When completed, the Karratha Health Campus will have double the number of emergency department bays, a state-of-the-art CT scanner, a new surgical centre, new maternity wing and delivery suites, a helipad and expanded outpatient facilities.

The hospital will open in 2018.
