Operator launches video on rail safety
■ Freight rail operator Aurizon is urging students to enjoy their school holiday well away from train tracks.
The company has produced an animated Youtube video called Stay Off The Tracks.
It describes alarming facts including that nationally there are more than 1000 near or actual train intersection collisions a year and on average someone is killed every 10 days.
Aurizon safety vice-president Neil Backer said people walking across sections of rail lines without safety crossings were a major concern for the company.
“We move around 160 trains every day across Australia and these trains are extremely heavy,” he said. “Some trains can weigh up to 14,000 tonnes, the equivalent of more than 9000 cars, and can take two kilometres to stop.
“The message is not getting through; (that) you should only cross railway lines at dedicated crossings.
“Our train drivers can’t swerve to miss you and you are playing Russian roulette with your life.
“The impact a near miss can have on our train drivers should not be underestimated.”
