High temps linked to fish deaths

High water temperatures and low oxygen levels are likely to have contributed to mass fish deaths near Wickham over Christmas, according to the Department of Fisheries.

Video surfaced on Facebook in December of thousands of dead baitfish washed up near Wickham Dog Beach, sparking an investigation by Fisheries.

Fisheries northern region manager Peter Godfrey said the large school of baitfish had likely become trapped in a tidal catchment at low tide, which would have rapidly lost sufficient oxygen because of the number of fish there.

“Testing of samples collected on the day the fish-kill report was received indicated that disease was not a causal factor in this case,” he said.

Mr Godfrey said any fish kills should be reported to FISHWATCH on 1800 815 507.
