Welcome to Country idea for meetings

The Shire of Ashburton has decided to investigate the possibility of starting council meetings with a formal Welcome to Country.

Shire councillors regularly coordinate Welcome to Country acknowledgements at local events, but have never had a policy on including them within council meetings.

The proposal is to add a Welcome to Country to the usual declaration by councillors that they have read and considered the agenda, made at the opening of every meeting.

The policy is intended to formally pay respect to the first people of the land whenever council meets and further reconciliation efforts by the shire.

A report will now be prepared.
