The West Pilbara cricket team are champions at the annual cricket senior country competition in B-grade.

The win puts West Pilbara in the Agrade competition for next year.

Held in Perth from January 17-23, West Pilbara took on the Peel team in the cricket senior country week grand final.

West Pilbara Cricket Association president Gavin Paterson said the team played in a “spectacular fash- ion” and the win was unexpected. “We took a young side, light on batsmen and hoped to win one or two games for the week,” he said.

West Pilbara defeated the Peel team by the skin of their teeth, with the final score at 8/185 to 9/186.

Mr Paterson said the win could lead to bigger things for the association.

“Already, country rep squads are approaching me regarding a few of our players for things like Country XI and other representative opportunities, although it’s pretty early to tell what that will lead to exactly,” he said.

West Pilbara vice-captain Craig Ford, captain Michael James and Corey Rutgers.
