Probationary scheme may continue
Housing Minister Colin Holt has remained tight-lipped on whether a probationary tenancies trial will be extended after its trial period comes to an end. The trial involves new public housing tenants being put on probation for six months during which they can be evicted for misbehaving. Mr Holt said he was personally “keen” on the trial, but would wait for the review to come out before making a decision. “Feedback we’ve got internally is they really like it because it has given them another tool to manage different tenancies,” he said. “It’s a bit more resource-intensive, so what I really want to know is how it changes behaviour in a tenancy sense and also what sort of extra resources is it taking?” Mr Holt said there were more than 500 people on the public housing waiting list, with 101 considered priorities.
