Grylls to recontest seat

WA Nationals elder statesman Brendon Grylls will recontest his State seat of Pilbara next March, shelving the prospect of a switch to Federal politics — for now.

Mr Grylls had been linked to the Federal seat of Durack, held by Liberal Melissa Price, and was last year openly courted by Nationals deputy leader Barnaby Joyce.

Nominations for Pilbara preselection closed on January 21 and Mr Grylls told locals at a party sundowner in Karratha that evening he was staying put. The party confirmed the nomination in a lowkey announcement on the Nationals WA Pilbara Facebook page.

Mr Grylls resigned from Cabinet and the Nationals leadership in 2013 to recharge his batteries.

Mr Joyce last week accepted Mr Grylls’ decision but held out hope they would one day be Federal colleagues. “It seems Brendon is going to look after his people in the State electorate of Pilbara but I remain in the hope that he will eventually move into the Federal arena,” he said.
