Colleague in close shave
A Karratha real estate agent will take the plunge and shave her head next month in support of her friend and colleague, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2013.
North West Realty property department head Adele Murtagh will take the step for the World’s Greatest Shave at 11am on March 31 outside the Hedland Place business.
Her colleagues will also join in the fundraising efforts by colouring their hair, spurred on by business operations manager Marie Chandler, who has endured a two-year battle with the blood cancer.
Ms Murtagh said supporting a colleague who was “like a sister” was worth losing hair over.
“I’m actually looking forward to it — I approached my partner about it and he is over the moon,” she said.
“I have been told I look good without hair, so it will be interesting.
“Marie is like a sister to me so the more I can push it, the more we can get it out there. “It all helps.” Mrs Chandler was diagnosed with leukaemia after going in for a routine blood test when she was feeling under the weather.
“No one could know how it feels when you do actually lose your hair … then losing your eyebrows, your eyelashes, you really do look sick,” she said.
“After two years of chemo, radiotherapy, bone marrow transplant, things like that — after all the ups and downs you think everything should be on the way up, but it’s not.
“I do have grandchildren so that focuses me more on their future — I want to see them grow up.
“There’s lots to look forward to.”
Mrs Chandler said the overwhelming support had given her a constant boost through the treatment process.
The event will be open to the public and Ms Murtagh encouraged as many people as possible to go along and watch or take part in the shave.
