Cook­ing up a sweet storm

Pil­bara lo­cal and food wiz Danielle Lid­ster’s recipe for her home­made Raf­faello balls has been se­lected to be fea­tured in Ther­momix’s Recipes to Love e-book, which is avail­able na­tion­wide.

Ther­momix ran a num­ber of com­pe­ti­tions over the course of 2015 where users sub­mit­ted their favourite recipes and “the best of the best” were se­lected and com­piled into a new dig­i­tal cook­book launched last Fri­day.

Al­though desserts are not her spe­cialty, Mrs Lid­ster, hav­ing loved Raf­faello balls, came up with the recipe over the Christ­mas sea­son a cou­ple of years ago.

“It was a Christ­massy thing and I just thought I’d give it a go. It can’t be hard — choco­late, co­conut and al­mond — (I’ll) throw it all to­gether and see what hap­pens.

“Desserts are far from my spe­cialty, but fun­nily enough this one’s ob­vi­ously a win­ner.”

Her gam­ble paid off as the sweet treats were a hit and she sub­mit­ted the recipe to Ther­momix in De­cem­ber.

Mrs Lid­ster, who has lived in the Pil­bara for most of her life, said her love for cook­ing stemmed from her Ital­ian roots.

“I love cook­ing, I love en­ter­tain­ing, I love hav­ing peo­ple over for din­ner and things like that,” she said.

“I’m adopted and my mum and dad worked their butts off — they were so busy.

“It was al­ways meat and veg or Chicken Tonight out of the jar, so when I met my birth mother’s side of the fam­ily — be­cause she’s Ital­ian — it re­ally gave me in­spi­ra­tion.”

Mrs Lid­ster’s said her love for cook­ing meant she dom­i­nated the kitchen.

“I try to teach my fam­ily, my chil­dren and my hus­band recipes, but be­cause I love cook­ing so much I tend to take over the kitchen and I don’t give them much space — I think I need to learn to step back a bit.”
