Cooking up a sweet storm

Pilbara local and food wiz Danielle Lidster’s recipe for her homemade Raffaello balls has been selected to be featured in Thermomix’s Recipes to Love e-book, which is available nationwide.

Thermomix ran a number of competitions over the course of 2015 where users submitted their favourite recipes and “the best of the best” were selected and compiled into a new digital cookbook launched last Friday.

Although desserts are not her specialty, Mrs Lidster, having loved Raffaello balls, came up with the recipe over the Christmas season a couple of years ago.

“It was a Christmassy thing and I just thought I’d give it a go. It can’t be hard — chocolate, coconut and almond — (I’ll) throw it all together and see what happens.

“Desserts are far from my specialty, but funnily enough this one’s obviously a winner.”

Her gamble paid off as the sweet treats were a hit and she submitted the recipe to Thermomix in December.

Mrs Lidster, who has lived in the Pilbara for most of her life, said her love for cooking stemmed from her Italian roots.

“I love cooking, I love entertaining, I love having people over for dinner and things like that,” she said.

“I’m adopted and my mum and dad worked their butts off — they were so busy.

“It was always meat and veg or Chicken Tonight out of the jar, so when I met my birth mother’s side of the family — because she’s Italian — it really gave me inspiration.”

Mrs Lidster’s said her love for cooking meant she dominated the kitchen.

“I try to teach my family, my children and my husband recipes, but because I love cooking so much I tend to take over the kitchen and I don’t give them much space — I think I need to learn to step back a bit.”
