Karratha man enjoys NZ run
Karratha local Gregg Porter placed 18th out of more than 600 participants in the Tarawera 100 Ultra Marathon in New Zealand earlier this month.
Porter ran the 102km trail around Rotorua in 10hr. 36min.
After training by running from Dampier to Karratha, Porter said the New Zealand weather and terrain were something to get used to.
“When you’re in a cooler temperature it’s a lot easier on your body,” he said.
“During the day it rained, so it was quite muddy and slippery.
“You’re always having to look where you put your feet and dodging over little rocks and over little roots, through the trees and under logs.”
Porter said he enjoyed running in nature as it was a great sport for building mental strength.
He plans to compete in the North Face 100 in May — a 100km marathon through the Blue Mountains in New South Wales.
Porter said his drive came from the encouragement he received from friends and co-workers, who would honk their horns in support as they drove past during his 23km training runs.
