Country championships to make a splash
The WA Water Polo Country Championships will be held in Karratha for the first time this weekend, with teams from Busselton, Bunbury, Port Hedland and Geraldton making the trip. Karratha Water Polo members Gary Vincent, Belinda Brooks, Kate Kalajzich, Sally Linn, Susan Giles and Justin Angove have high hopes for a finals appearance.
Karratha’s best water polo players are gearing up to host the WA Country Championships for the first time this weekend.
Teams from Hedland, Bunbury, Busselton and Geraldton will make the trip to the Leisureplex for a weekend featuring match-ups across three days from Friday evening.
Karratha will have every chance at victory with two teams each in the men’s and women’s competition.
Karratha Water Polo Association president Justin Angove said it would be a big step up playing at the elite level.
“Fortunately with the growth of our association we’ve been able to put in two men’s and two women’s teams,” he said.
“It’s a good opportunity for those guys and girls who wouldn’t make the A-team to participate in this high level waterpolo competition.
“This year we have a really solid chance in both men’s and women’s to give it crack but I just hope we make it to the grand final.”
Angove said Geraldton were the team to beat, having won the past two championships.
Women’s coach Gary Vincent said he expected a much more strategic and aggressive level of competition this weekend.
“This is our third year and we have a really strong team, with some good experience,” he said.
“As a coach I would love nothing more than to hold that trophy up at the end of the tournament.
“It’s a great opportunity for everybody in the club to get the chance to play for the association and potentially get selected to play for the State.”
Vincent said the best players from every club would be on display.
The tournament kicks off at 5pm on Friday night, and Angove encouraged the public to come down and cheer on their home side.
