TAFE job cuts for regional WA

Around 90 TAFE jobs will be axed in regional WA, including in the Pilbara, as part of a major State Government overhaul of vocational and educational training across WA.

WA Training and Workforce Minister Liza Harvey last week announced 11 TAFE colleges and their 70 campus locations will be streamlined into a network of five colleges from April 11, in a move designed to save $23 million and promote greater collaboration and resource-sharing across regional and metropolitan colleges.

The Pilbara Institute will amalgamate with the Kimberley Training Institute to form the North Regional TAFE.

The change will result in up to 230 job cuts, including 90 in the regions.

It is not known at this stage how many of those cuts will be in the Pilbara as the new structure is still being determined.

The reform is in line with recom- mendations outlined in the Training Sector Reform Project, which identified WA as having six of the eight smallest colleges in the country and recommended more resource-sharing between colleges and stronger links with local industry.

Mrs Harvey said the changes would transfer a lot of money spent on TAFE administration over to teaching, where it can better benefit students.

“(City institutes) may be able to send a lecturer up to some of the Kimberley and Pilbara centres to deliver course content that wasn’t previously available,” she said.

She said the reforms would have minimal impact on students this year and were expected to produce more courses in the long term.

Chamber of Minerals and Energy chief executive Reg Howard-Smith said the WA resources sector welcomed the restructure.

The Pilbara Institute and Kimberley Training Institute both declined to comment at this time.
