The Karratha Basketball Association held its Development Squad Day for the under-12s division last weekend at Karratha Leisureplex.

Boys and girls were trying out for the State Development Squad which will be competing in a tournament against other State country teams in November.

Organisers were expecting only 30 or so children to attend but had more than 100 registered to try out.

KBA junior co-ordinator Nic Kot said they were “overwhelmed” by the level of enthusiasm.

“We’re just starting small — just 12s and 14s at the moment — and once they’re chosen, they’ll train once a week well up until November and then they’ll hopefully go down to Perth but we need funding and all that sort of thing for that to happen as well,” she said.

The association will be looking for sponsors and holding fundraisers throughout the year.
