Boy to go under the clippers for good cause
■ Karratha 11-year-old Jared Coutts usually dislikes haircuts, but today he has his biggest one yet.
The Tambrey Primary School Year 6 student’s mop of blonde hair will be shaved off in a school assembly this morning for Leukaemia Foundation campaign the World’s Greatest Shave.
Jared’s effort was inspired by his experience of losing a family member to the disease.
“I want to do the World’s Greatest Shave because one of my cousins, he died from cancer four years ago,” he said. “He was only 20.” “He was so young and I miss him a lot.”
Jared, who is a Scout and has been involved in a lot of charity activities, decided to do his bit for the World’s Greatest Shave when he saw an ad for it on TV last year, but unfortunately that was on the last day of the campaign.
He said he was aiming to raise $2000 because that was the amount the Leukaemia Foundation said could contribute to major blood cancer research.
Jared and his mother Kellie said his school and the community had been very supportive, helping him raise more than $1000 through an online fundraising page, door-knocking around Karratha, and donation boxes in Kmart and Bed, Bath and Beauty.
Jared said he felt “kind of nervous” about the shave, but also brave to be doing something not many people did.
“It feels good because I’m helping people,” he said.
