Thunder prevail over Giants in first women’s match
The newly formed Pilbara Women’s Football League held its first regional exhibition match last weekend, where the Ashburton Thunder defeated the Karratha Giants in a close contest.
Both teams assembled 15 players each and travelled to Tom Price for the match on Sunday, March 13, to promote the league at a regional level.
It proved to be an even game with a high level of skills on show, which the Thunder won 4.3.27 to the Giants’ 3.5.23.
The Thunder fired off several goals in the first quarter to establish an early lead, while the Giants took some time to settle into the game.
After a quarter-time pep talk, the Giants rallied and went on to win the next three quarters on the scoreboard.
But though they came close to equalising in the final term, their effort was not quite enough to overtake Thunder’s lead and the home side won by four points.
The teams’ dedication showed in the long trek they took to reach to the oval — the Giants left Karratha at 6am and returned at 8pm to make the fixture — and their willingness to play in 40C heat.
Pilbara women’s football teams are planning more exhibition matches and to train and play locally.
