Pastoralists urged to attend regional forums

Security for pastoral leases, diversification and rangelands development will be the focus of a series of stakeholder forums as part of the public consultation on the draft Land Administration Amendment Bill 2016 in April.

Department of Lands director-general Colin Slattery said the forums were being held in regional locations as well as Perth.

Feedback to date has resulted in the introduction of buffers between pastoral lessees and a future minister for lands in the form of two protections against adverse decisions.

The first protection will be the requirement for the minister to seek advice from a relevant independent expert before making certain adverse decisions on a lease.

The second protection is an opportunity for a pastoralist to appeal to the State Administrative Tribunal should the minister decide not to renew a lease on the grounds of noncompliance.
