Seagulls claim high ground

The Nickol Bay Hockey Association had a record turnout from its female members last Wednesday night.

A third of the club’s members are women and the match between the Karratha Seagulls and Pilbara Giraffes saw women players dominate the field in a hard-fought competition.

Leading the Seagulls in red, Tania Underwood was fast in the goal circle and gave the team an early lead with the first goal.

Annabelle Little evened things up for the Giraffes with a quick goal from a turnaround before the defenders could get back in their positions.

The Pilbara Giraffes benefited from the youthful enthusiasm of no fewer than seven high school students.

This week Giraffes players Kodie Bickler and Sophie Sparks worked hard in defence, with attackers Dylan Felix, Ryan West and Jacob Innamorati, and came up against fellow student Tyler Atkinson, who was a wall of strength in defence for the Seagulls.

Woman of the match, Angela Ballantyne, scored the final goal just before the siren to bring the score to 10-7 for the Seagulls.

The club is always looking for new players.
