Exmouth comedian Shea “Squirly” Faithfull took the stage at the Raw Comedy National Grand Final as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival last Sunday.

Faithfull missed out on the winning spot, but beat more than 800 competitors from around the country to be one of 12 acts left in the competition.

Having never performed stand-up comedy before, Faithfull applied online to take part in the Raw Comedy Heats in Perth. “I just thought I’d give it a crack and so far it’s worked out,” he said.

Faithfull has lived in Exmouth from the age of eight and earned his nickname “Squirly” from a local tradition. “The funniest person in Exmouth, they’re always titled the Squirly,” he said.

“If you challenge the Squirly and if you kill and eat his heart, you get the nickname.”

Danielle Walker of Victoria was crowned the 2016 winner, with Clinton Haines from NSW runner-up. Previous winners include Hannah Gadsby, Josh Thomas and Tom Ballad.
