Ball-goers to samba, Rio style

Preparations are heating up for the annual Marble Bar Ball, as the committee keeps hard at work to ensure this year’s event is bigger and better than ever.

And things are sure to get even hotter with Farmer Wants a Wife alumni Matt Goyder announced as an MC on the night alongside local milliner Amanda Smith.

Ball chairwoman Pip Short said the small but dedicated committee had been hosting regular “crafternoon” sessions to create papier-mache maracas for table decorations and several other items for the Rio de Janeiro-inspired gala ball.

“A lot of work goes into an event like this,” she said.

“We start organising it in February — sorting catering, security, band, grant and funding submissions, licences and approvals, theme, decorations, advertising and so on.

“It is the biggest weekend in Marble Bar (and) it is a huge boost for the local economy and a weekend that they are very proud of.”

Tickets for the event went on sale last month and cost $100 each.

Ms Short said the event was sure to once again be a huge hit, adding having a local celebrity such as Farmer Matt on board as a host for the ball was a huge win for the committee. “It’s great the work Matt has done to raise the profile of the Pilbara,” she said.

“It makes the event a bit more fun and hopefully draws new people to it.

“We are also glad to have Amanda from Amanda Lynn, previously Gloria Pearl, come along again and be a guest judge and MC as well as having her donate the prize for the belle of the ball.

“She makes incredibly beautiful products that anyone would be honoured to wear and she was great fun last year.”

Prizes on the night will this year include the ever popular Belle of the Ball as well as the inaugural Rossy Rotor Beau of the Ball, which is in memory of last year’s Beau Ross McDowell who died in a helicopter crash last year.

Ms Short said there would be some surprises in store on the night for punters and urged guests to get their tickets fast to ensure they didn’t miss out and so that catering, which is being done by new venue Mad Clappin’ Harry’s Cafe, could be confirmed.
