Weather ideal for billfish comp
Ideal fishing weather forecast for the coming WA Day long weekend has put the Dampier Billfish Shootout on track for smooth-sailing.
The Nickol Bay Sportsfishing Club is busy gearing up for its premier tournament of the year, which will see fishers head out from Dampier’s Hampton Harbour for three days of tagging and releasing billfish from sailfish to black marlin.
Competition committee chairman Andrew Carpenter said so far, weather conditions forecast for the weekend were phenomenal for fishing, with light and variable winds and a sunny outlook.
“It’s the first time in 12 years that the weather forecast has been this exceptionally good,” he said.
Twenty-seven boats and 90 anglers were signed up as of the end of last week and with the registration cut-off at 3.30pm today, anyone still on the fence needs to get in quickly.
Fishers will have the chance to win $33,000 worth of prizes and sponsors gifts and meet former West Coast Eagles legend turned fishing representative Glen Jakovich, who will MC the event and sail on the sponsor boat.
Competition committee member James Gorham said the club was excited to be putting on “a very highquality competition that will be fun for all anglers” that also contributed to scientific research through the NSW Department of Primary Industries’ national Game Fish Tagging Program.
A briefing will be held at the Hampton Harbour Boat and Sailing Club this Friday at 6pm before the tournament launches with a Saturday dawn cast, concluding with a presentation evening on Monday.
