The City of Karratha is exploring the idea of establishing an industrial park to promote the trade relationship between Australia and China.

At the recent EastxWest Pilbara Kimberley forum held in China, the City pledged support for a plan to build a China Australia Business Park in Lanshan District, Rizhao, as well as to investigate the possibility of building a similar park in the Karratha area.

The park is intended to be a hub for import and export services around port infrastructure and bolster investment opportunities between the two countries in light of the China Australia Free Trade Agreement.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said though a prospective business park was some time off, the council already had some possible locations in mind.

“This is a very long-term project that will take significant planning, but it is possible that a park like this could be accommodated in the strategic industrial area around the future Anketell Port, which already has significant Chinese investment,” he said.

“We will continue working on the idea, however the current priority is to advocate for the park in our sister city in China.”

The business park is part of a suite of programs the City is considering for promoting the Australia-China relationship at a local level, along with school, sports and cultural exchange programs to China.
