Pool cue ‘thrown like a spear’
A Roebourne man has been given a backdated sentence of 14 months in prison on charges after pleading guilty to wounding with a pool cue and several thefts and break-ins.
Rhys Melissen recently appeared in the Karratha Magistrate’s Court via video link on charges of unlawful wounding, stealing a motor vehicle, aggravated burglary, stealing and trespass.
The court was told that in March last year, Melissen was in a sports bar when he got into an argument with his grandfather. As security guards escorted his grandfather towards the exit, Melissen threw a pool cue “like a spear” at him, striking his face.
The victim starting bleeding and had to be taken to Nickol Bay Hospital for treatment. The other charges arise from a string of burglaries and thefts on May 19 last year .
Magistrate Robert Young said Melissen had been in custody for more than a year awaiting sentencing and that time was sufficient for his offences.
