Pool cue ‘thrown like a spear’

A Roe­bourne man has been given a back­dated sen­tence of 14 months in prison on charges after plead­ing guilty to wound­ing with a pool cue and sev­eral thefts and break-ins.

Rhys Melis­sen re­cently ap­peared in the Kar­ratha Mag­is­trate’s Court via video link on charges of un­law­ful wound­ing, steal­ing a mo­tor ve­hi­cle, ag­gra­vated bur­glary, steal­ing and tres­pass.

The court was told that in March last year, Melis­sen was in a sports bar when he got into an ar­gu­ment with his grand­fa­ther. As se­cu­rity guards es­corted his grand­fa­ther to­wards the exit, Melis­sen threw a pool cue “like a spear” at him, strik­ing his face.

The vic­tim start­ing bleed­ing and had to be taken to Nickol Bay Hospi­tal for treat­ment. The other charges arise from a string of bur­glar­ies and thefts on May 19 last year .

Mag­is­trate Robert Young said Melis­sen had been in cus­tody for more than a year await­ing sen­tenc­ing and that time was suf­fi­cient for his of­fences.
